It is in our communities and it is in our church. The conversation today was about visiting teaching.

For those of you who are not Mormon, visiting teaching is a big part of the women's organization called Relief Society at the Church. It is one way that we learn to love and serve others and it is how the Lord, through His Church, makes sure that all of his flock are taken care of. If you are willing to be a visiting teacher, you are assigned both a partner and usually 2 or 3 other women in the congregation to visit and you are charged with checking in with those sisters and helping to meet their needs every month. The fruits of your visits are then reported at the end of the month to the Relief Society president who can organize more help to those who may need it. Companionships and assignments are often long thought about and prayed about before they are given.

Now I know that I am going to offend some people here but just let me rant. I know that I don't know everyone's circumstances and that there really may be some legitimate excuses. I also know that I am in no way perfect or an expert. I also need to note that my rant is in no way aimed at anyone. So this is just my from my perspective and you can take it or leave it. I used to be the visiting teaching coordinator in our ward and I didn't see too much going on but I am hearing more and more lately about women just complaining and making excuses for not doing doing their visiting teaching because of who they have been partnered with or the ladies that they are assigned to. Really? Are we in high school again?

First of all, you were asked and have accepted the responsibility to be a visiting teacher. If you don't want to do it, then don't say you will. You do have a choice.

Once you've accepted then you have to put a little faith in the Lord. Like I said: It is something that has been prayed about and a lot of work and thought has gone into the assignments.

"But, when I call they never answer!" SO WHAT!?! If it's your companion, then check in with your sisters on your own. That's no excuse for you to not take action yourself. If it's the sisters you've been assigned to, show up without calling, send them a note, "friend" them on Facebook, simply smile or say hi or sit next to them at church. That is ALL you really have to do. It doesn't have to be a long, organized, quiet visit to their house. You are not called to make a visit, you are called to get to know them, take care of them and serve them.

"But, we don't get along at all!" SO WHAT!?! Did you ever think that maybe there was something that you needed to learn from that person? Maybe it is something that they needed to learn from you? Are we really so narrow minded that we will only visit and take care of the people that are cool or are our friends? Are we really so lazy that we won't step outside our comfort zones, become pliable and allow the Lord to mold us into the person He would have us be If we can't do it within our own congregation then how will we ever be able do it for those more needy that aren't.

I have gotten to learn this first hand. I got a visiting teaching companion that I swore did not like me and would never work as my companion but as I have gotten to know her and serve with her and be served by her I have gained a real friend. It just took a little bit of stretching me beyond where I was comfortable. I also have been assigned to serve sisters that I thought didn't like me and have come to learn to be more open minded to the fact that maybe their personality is just different. Regardless of how different we are I can still love them. The Lord has helped me learn many great life lessons just through visiting teaching.

From The Book of Mormon, Mosiah 3:19 says:
19 For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father.

So I say, "Suck it up people." Serving Christ is not about only doing what is easy or convenient for you. If your goal is to become more like Christ then we need to put off those "natrual man" tendencies to be lazy and full of excuses. We need to be "willing to submit to all things" including our visiting teaching assignments. I know that as we do we can truly learn to feel the love of Christ. So maybe if we don't think about it as a call to visit a particular person but a call to serve Him we will be less inclined to come up with so many lame excuses.
(Mathew 7:1-2) This was a lesson I decided to get out of my experience at the grocery store the other day. I learn many lessons there since that it where I do go there a lot.
It had kind of been a long day. I got up with my usual 4:30 am alarm to go to my Crossfit class. I got a little frustrated during the WOD because I didn't do any of the movements really well. (Toes to Bar and Double Unders are not my friends right now) I came home to the kids and sent Charly off to school. Then, went to work where it had been an o.k. day but Carter was acting out a little bit and I kind of wanted to get angry at one of my coworkers that tried to interrupt my disciplining with whatever thoughts she had of her own. (Hello! I'm the mom and I'm right here talking to him already. Back off!) But of course I just smiled at her.
We left work and went to lunch. The kids begged for McDonald's on the drive home and I caved. But I just started this 21 day sugar detox. Ordering a salad with nothing on it while the kids eat their burgers and fries was not my idea of fun. Not to mention that Diet Dr. Pepper in the machine staring right at me! Today is day 3 of the detox and the side effects are beginning to set in. I am feeling a little grumpy but that could be PMS too.
From McDonald's we headed to Costco which didn't turn out too bad but I'm beginning to feel the $$$$ pinch of eating all of this healthy stuff. When we finished there, we made the stop at Hyvee. (I promise, telling you my whole day has a point to it.) It took a little longer than I would have liked there. The kids were obviously done shopping and Carter was everywhere bumping into people with his mini cart. (Seriously, why do they even have those? They are such a pain in the you know what for EVERYONE!) We made it through and finally got home only to realize that the baby was missing her pacifier and one for her shoes. New shoes that we just bought a couple weeks ago after losing one in a different store. Not about to just do that again.
I piled all the kids back in the car only this time we were on a time crunch to make it back home before Charly got off the bus. I immediately found the cart that we had used sitting on the walk outside the front door. I park the van there on the curb with my flashing lights and jump out. Yes, it is the fire lane, painted in red with no parking signs everywhere. The shoe wasn't in the cart so I lock the doors and tell the kids to stay put while I run right inside to the desk that's right inside the door. I luckily got the shoe back! It had made it and the binki had made it to the lost and found. Yay!
On my way back out the door this older gentleman is walking in. I'm pretty much running but we exchanged smiles and then he grabbed my arm. His smile disappeared and his face became angry. He then proceeded with this comment, "So you think that the No Parking signs apply to everyone but you do ya?" I didn't know what to say. All that came out was, "I'm sorry if you were inconvenienced but maybe if you knew what I was doing you would understand. I've got to get to my three littles." And I ran off. It didn't take much for him to let go. (After grabbing one of my "guns" he probably knew better not to mess with me too much. LOL!)
Needless to say, I got into my car and started to cry. I didn't understand how he could be so mean. How he could be so quick to treat me so rottenly? Surely he would not have done so had he been in my shoes all day. I started to get angry. Then those powerful words from the Savior popped in my mind. "Judge not, lest ye be judged." I can't be angry because who knows what his day was like.
But then I realized that I too needed to remember how I felt right then. I needed to remember that the next time I felt like jumping to any kind of conclusion about anyone. I should consider what kind of day or life they may have had. Like my coworker earlier. She's only been working there about a month. Maybe she didn't know I was Carter's mom. Feeling angry at her right then might have been wrong. How many other times have I walked by someone and thought a nasty thought based on how things looked right there at that moment? How many times have I assumed something before I got to know the full story?
No, I don't think that I am above the law and can park anywhere I want regardless of the signs. I know that fire lanes are important to have clear in any kind of emergency. But we all are given the liberty to choose. And in that instance, today I decided that breaking the law for that 45 seconds was going to be worth it for me. If I would have had to take a ticket or have my van damaged because I disobeyed the law, then those would have been consequences that I chose. Like any other choice, choosing to judge others too quickly has consequences. They will effect more than just you but it is you that it will effect the MOST. Because with that same kind of judgement that you gave that guy up the street or that girl at the mall, YOU will be judged. Is that where you want to be? Or would your prefer the same kind of judgement the ultimate Judge would give you? One of absolute empathy and compassion.
We bought timeshares from Wyndam while we were in college and Jason was doing well in the door to door sales business. We have, in harder times since then, regretted the amount of money that goes into it. It is when we get to do things like this that we remember the big picture and why we did it in the first place. So the deal is that we have 8000 credits a year to go to any one of hundreds of resorts around the country and in different parts of the world. If we don't use them they roll over for up to 2 years.
This time we chose to go to Grand Lake, Monkey Island, Oklahoma. Look it up. It is literally the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE. But the resort and the golf course that is situated on are so beautiful!!! The time on the lake also so awesome! This particular resort happens to be almost exactly half way to my parents in Dallas,TX so it was a perfect place to meet up with them and have an end of the summer fling right before school starts back up again. We really don't get to see my family much. We get together with Jason's family A LOT since most of them live here in Iowa. I, regretably, get jealous sometimes. I have missed not getting to see my siblings grow up and be there for them more. But having this timeshare thing has given us lots of opportunities to make memories with them.
The highlight for me was at the very start of our stay. We had just gotten to the resort and my parents had beat us there by about an hour. While Jason was checking us in, I got the kids out of the car to start walking them down to where the room was and my mom came out walking toward us. From behind me, (anyone that knows Caelyn knows that her little legs are sometimes slow) I hear a little girl scream, "Grandma Bell!!!" Caelyn comes streaking past me with sounds of joy and gives her grandma a big hug. My little girl knows who her grandma is! That is why we do this! I had debated going to my 10 year class reunion in Alabama that weekend too but that at the start let me know that I had made the right decision to go see my family instead.
We did horseback riding with the girls. Lots of golfing for the guys. We celebrated our 9 year anniversary and my parents 29 year anniversary. And the last day we spent on the lake with a pontoon and a jet ski. So much fun! Even in the middle of Oklahoma!Elisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01356974551770701308noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4715668298709178328.post-6479284235374356642012-08-03T15:13:00.001-07:002012-08-03T15:13:14.968-07:00NMFN Annual Meeting part 3

Probably the biggest highlight for Annual Meeting was the Maroon 5 concert. We had a such a great time. We were probably only one of a very few that had little children with us. The concert did only go from 8-9:30, there was only 1 curse word said, and since it was a private company concert nobody was going super crazy. Likely the most sober Maroon 5 concert ever. Unfortunately, I think the guy from Alabama sitting next to me might have left with the impression that we were polygamist because Jason and I were on either end with Kiera and the kids inbetween us and then I told him I graduated from Brigham Young. He didn't talk to me after that. Oh well :). This was at the end of our busy day at the museums and water park and while the kids did all get good naps before dinner, Caelyn was pretty tired at the end of the concert.

Past concerts we've been to at Annual: Earth, Wind, and Fire, Reba McEntire, Sheryl Crow, Jerry Sienfeld. But this year was definitely the best so far!

Our pre-concert ritual is to go eat at a place called Kopps. I'm not sure if they have any restaurants outside of Milwaukee but we LOVE it. They do the big burgers, baskets of homemade fries, jugs of homemade root beer, and really tasty ice cream. Most of their seating is also outside which just adds to the experience. We highly recommend it! I'll have to take pictures next time.

They looked like they were going to end the concert early without even singing "Moves like Jaeger" until we gave them about 10 minutes of cheering then they came back out with 3 more songs. In one of them Adam Levine conducted the audience in a round using parts of their song "Beauty Queen" and teased company execs about not singing. Charly thought it was cool that we made them come back out.

Wednesday was the last day so Jason went down for the closing meeting while we cleaned up and checked out of the hotel. By the time he was done we were able to meet up and we headed to the Milwaukee Science Museum where we saw the dinosaurs, an IMAX about monkeys and elephants, and this very cool butterfly room. There were so many butterflies!!! We've been here before and there have never been so many. The girls were screaming and freaking out about the bugs flying all around them so Jason took them out but Carter, Kiera and I stayed. Carter was having the time of his life getting the butterflies to land on him.
We had an all around good time in Milwaukee. It was so busy that it just few by in a whirlwind. I'm so glad that we had Kiera there for extra hands and added fun!!! We are sad that she has flown back home to Texas because we really enjoyed having her, especially the kids.Elisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01356974551770701308noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4715668298709178328.post-27466660617052479822012-08-03T13:38:00.000-07:002012-08-03T13:38:05.098-07:00NMFN Annual Meeting part 2...

Jason was busy the Monday that we were in Milwaukee. He had meetings starting at 6am and he wasn't done until midnight. The day before had been pretty busy between church and race and zoo so we just hung out at the hotel. We took our time at breakfast, swam in the pool, took good naps, and had treats. Carissa really enjoyed being allowed to eat a cookie. So cute!

Monday was relaxed but Tuesday was very busy. As part of Annual Meeting the family can get passes for all of the different attractions downtown. So we started the day by going downtown with Jason. We found a place to park that was kind of in the middle of everything that we wanted to do. Then, we walked to the Children's Museum which is very fun. Each year they have different themes. In previous years they've had things with golf balls and things with potato heads but this year they had a stand for each of the 50 states to represent what each state is known for. It was a blast!

After the kids museum we got a snack and walked across the bridge to the art museum. For the past 4 years we've always just skipped past this one but my sister, Kiera, is a little bit of an artist so we decided to venture in. The buidling from the outside is a beautiful work of art itself and it's right on the lake so the view from inside is breathtaking as well. If you watch Transformers 3 this is the building that Patrick Dempsy has his office and cars all set up in. The movie shows an arial view and then all the cars are set up in the big lobby area. We didn't realize that until we were watching the movie back at the hotel and the kids all shouted, "Mom, that's were we went!" The kids were all really good in the museum. We didn't destroy any art so I call that a success.
The art museum is close to the Northwestern Mutual Home Office and they were running a shuttle all day if we had our name badges so we caught that back to the mall instead of walking. Once there, we ate lunch and then changed into our swim gear and headed over to the Hilton where there is a very cool indoor water park that we hadn't ever done before either. There was lots of shallow water so Caelyn and Carter felt confident enough to run around without floaties and go down some slides. Once we got changed we went to go pick up Jason from his meetings. Caelyn and Carissa were both asleep before we even got out of the Hilton.
Elisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01356974551770701308noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4715668298709178328.post-61920258443938964592012-08-03T13:10:00.000-07:002012-08-03T13:10:30.470-07:00NMFN Annual Meeting

Last week we made our treck to Milwaukee for Nothwestern Mutual's Annual Meeting. We always start out checking in first and letting the kids run around the information stands inside. This stand had info on being politically involved and there was a cardboard pic of Obama and Romney. This is who the kids wanted to get their picture taken with ;).

The kids' favorite part of Annual Meeting is getting to go to the Garden Party at the Milwaukee Zoo. It is not a huge zoo but we have a lot of fun. They put up inflatables, we go through the zoo, there are huge tents set up with live music and different kinds of food and there are lots of games set up for the kids. Everything you walk by like the popcorn and ice cream stands are all free. Our favorite foods are always the ribs, mozarella sticks, grilled corn and lemonade.

There is a race at on the first official day of the festivies. They call it Roots and Wings because it is a race between the home office and all of the district offices. This was the 35th year they've done it and Root won, darn it. It is huge though. 7,500 runners all taking over downtown Milwaukee. Jason ran the 10K and my sister Kiera ran the 5K but the rest of us just did the 1 mile walk.
Elisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01356974551770701308noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4715668298709178328.post-75636514714018489492012-08-03T12:27:00.001-07:002012-08-03T12:29:08.432-07:00Charly's Cheer Camp
Charly got to participate in a one week cheer camp this summer and really loved it. You can tell by the huge smile on her face. The camp was put on by a few of the Waukee High School Cheerleaders. Charly has never taken dance but after watching her it made me rethink puting her in a dance class or something. She's pretty good.
My younger sister, Kiera, joined us here in Iowa on June 19th. The kids were (and still are) thrilled to have her stay with us for a while. She's probably going to get some different experiences staying with us. She's a senior this next year and it's hard to believe. When I left the house she was only 8. I guess I can get payback for all the times I changed her diaper, fed her, and cleaned up her messes...hehehehe! In preparation for her coming we did a little craigslist shopping for a mattress so that she didn't have to spend 6q weeks on an air mattress. I ended up with 2 from a lady that was moving and needed to get rid of all of her stuff. They were FREE! I loaded them up in the back of the van and the 4 kids were crammed together in the front. Probably not going to win mom of the year for it but we made it.

We have also done lots of fishing. We found a pond in Urbandale that has so many little fish that all you have to do is drop your line and you get a fish right away. It's great for the catch and release with the kids but the fish are really small. We've even done fishing in the rain. This one was in Ankeny over Father's Day weekend. Caelyn thought that just running around in the rain was fun. I made them finish up when the lighting started.

Almost two weeks ago I threw out my back giving the girls a bath and was out for 4 days. I missed church and work and it happend to be the week that my sister had secured a temportary job so I didn't have her help but had some really great friends that brought in meals, prescribed me great meds and arranged for my kids to play so that I could take the time to get better. I love them all soooooo much!!!! But while I was just laying around and not really able to pick things up well, the baby decided that it was her opportunity to learn how to crawl. She is only 7 months old but is getting around and standing up on everything now. It's very cute!

Tuesday night was hot but we decided to head out and go camping anyway. The Church owns a property in Boone that has restrooms, cabins (not the comfy air conditioned kind but nice wooden structures that have a free flow of air but netting over to keep bugs out and wooden plank beds stacked 3 high to fit 12 people), firepits, and is by a creek. We got breaks from the heat with lots of water and juice in the pavilion with ceiling fans and in the hose attached to the back of the restroom. There is also an area with a tire swing that the kids loved. They also loved walking along the creek and seeing the different animal prints. More evidence of animals was seen and heard after we went to bed so I'm glad we were in a cabin and not a tent. We were the only people there and it was a quiet night. No wind in the trees, only a faint chirping of frogs, makes for a pretty creepy feeling when you hear the scratch and crunch in the leaves at 2 am.

Our Fourth of July holiday consisted of a fabulous breakfast of eggs, bacon, and pancakes on a campfire, heavy duty clean up on both cars and the house, a good time at the Waukee city parade, Jason got to play some golf, grilling out for dinner, and a great time in the front row for the Waukee city fireworks.

We literally had to lay down on our backs in order to see the fireworks. A couple of times Carter got nervous that they were going to fall on top of him. Carissa enjoyed tagging along for all of it and especially loved the fireworks when there were fountains or at the end for the finally when everything was really bright. We got to sit next to friends for the fireworks so that made it even better. At the parade, every float had treats of some kind and we placed ourselves at the very beginning when the kids on the back of the trucks are excited to throw candy and we ended up with as much candy as we usually get on Halloween. It was again REALLY HOT (temp was 100/heat index 110) and there were also a few floats that were handing out waters or icees and squirting with squirt guns. Those were much appreciated! Being with the family and celebrating our country made me appreciate all that we are blessed with and hope that we will still be able to enjoy those blessings for many years to come!

Anyone that has been in our house knows that the main level has a really open floor plan so I was hoping to use my painting to help distinguish a difference between the two rooms. I'm pretty sure that it is mission accomplished. Although Charly keeps telling me that the two colors don't match, I think it looks great! You can see the edge on the right of the pciture. It's more green than the picture really shows. I'd take a picture of the rest of the room but the kids broke the big mirror on the opposite wall from this the other day so it looks incomplete. My painting for now is done. I haven't decided for the master bed and bath, the nursery and main bath.
Elisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01356974551770701308noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4715668298709178328.post-4918278000386781702012-06-10T12:24:00.001-07:002012-06-10T12:24:21.888-07:00T-Ball

Carter started T-ball this last week. We missed his first practice because I have an awesome memory but it' wasn't a big deal. He caught on really quick and had a absolute blast! I was so excited just to see the huge smile he had on his face the whole time. All of the kids are 4 or 5 and it is co-ed. Each of the kids gets a chance up at bat every time and they just get to run to the next base everytime their teammate hits. When the last person comes up they pretend that they hit a homerun and they all just run through to home. Carter was real happy to hit the ball but when he would he'd just look at hit and took so coaxing to run to 1st. They also rotate positions in the in field everytime so he got to do a little catching the ball at short stop and throwing the ball back to the "pitcher" (since there really isn't a pitcher just a guy that stands in that position) from first. I snapped as many pictures as I could a did a couple videos so Jason could see since he was out of town. Carter had also insisted that we all hold signs up for him and the girls liked that part too.

I'm pretty sure that there were moms around me that were annoyed with all of our cheering but I really didn't care. I clapped and cheered for their kids too. Nothing wrong with a little enthusiasm. Midgame he really had to use the restroom and I him dancing in the infield but it doesn't seem to want to download right now so maybe later.
Elisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01356974551770701308noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4715668298709178328.post-74519836055248229862012-06-04T20:30:00.003-07:002012-06-04T20:30:57.436-07:00When the Cat's Away....

Every year for the last few years the guys (Jason, his dad, brothers, brothers in law and sometimes uncles) have taken a few days every summer to head up to Minnesota to fish. In past years all of us girls left behind have gotten together to go horseback riding but this year it rained and we had little girls that couldn't go so we didn't do that. I will sheepishly admit that I always feel kind of jipped. Where's my kid free week every year? But this year Carter go to go and it was so amazingly quiet and easy with just the three girls that them being gone actually was a break for me. We ended up doing all kinds of things. And it did make it a little bit sweeter that Jason came home from work early on Tuesday and told me to get dressed because we were going on a date. Suprize date ended up being whacking some balls at the range (which I probably haven't done in years) and some great Chinese food at a local place. My wonderful sis in law Jenny was great to pop in at the last minute to babysit.

On Wednesday we went around running errands. I did a search for free stuff on Craigslist and was just a little too slow on getting a free piano and free unused matresses. Kind of a bummer but if anyone would like to get rid of a piano or matress let me know :). So instead of going to pick those things up we went to Home Depot to get paint, then to the salon to get haircuts from the lovely Lindsay Sprague, then to the YMCA pool to wash things off and finally finished it of with some McDonald's for dinner.

Thursday, my mother in law came over and we made a trip to Costco, followed by a pizza lunch at Costco, and then we headed out to the Science Center for the kids to play. We were at the Science Center for a few hours and the girls had a blast. We started out our trip with a frantic search for my bag that I had ended up leaving by the car instead of puting it in the stroller. Luckily it had gone untouched. For dinner that night we met up with my sisters in law, Becca and Jenny, at Red Robin and then went to our house to watch War Horse. If you haven't seen it, it is a great war movie just very long. don't start it at a late hour. When the ladies all left my house I went back upstairs and painted Carter's room. It was a late night.

On Friday, I worked and took some time to work out at the Waukee YMCA. When we came home we all had a nap. Mom needed it after all of her painting. When we got up we headed to the salon again because they were having a 10th anniversary celebration. We had a good time running into old friends and we also got a great hook up of free samples of hair products and cookies. Subway was right next door so that's where we went for dinner. Friday night the painting continued but with a smaller room..the half bath downstairs.

Saturday started a little too early as I tried to get all of us dressed and ready to go to the Y early in the morning so I could teach Tiny Tumblers and Movin' with Music. I was a little late but am so glad that was the last Saturday that I will have to be there so early. Hopefully I will be able to use my Saturdays to work out now. After working we ate lunch and went swimming again. We had a relaxing night and all 4 of us ended up falling asleep in the living room while watching a movie. I woke up at around 9:30 and put each one of the girls in their beds then went to work again. This time I really needed to do some clean up (laundry, dishes, vaccuming) and when that was done I went straight on to painting again. This time it was the kitchen.

I again went to bed late but slept like a rock. We had to be at church by 9 and we were just a tiny bit late. We only came in just as the opening song was starting. It was fast and testimony meeting and I don't know why but I really felt like I should get up but of course I was alone so ended up taking the baby up there with me. I realized that I probably could have handed her off to someone real quick and that would have been better. It's too bad that Jason wasn't there tough.

May is a busy time for birthdays in our family so it's been kinda hard to keep up. Charly's birthday is first at the very end of April and then my birthday follows 8 days later, along with Mother's day real close to that and then Caelyn's birthday is 2 weeks after that. And that is just the birthdays in our house. There are many other May birthdays amongst the Aunts and Uncles. We only do big birthday parties for certain years to kind of keep costs down. With lots of kids it's the only way to stay sane.

This year Charly got to just have a couple of her friends come over and we ate pizza, watched a movie, and painted nails. The girls must have been a little excited because all of the kids were crazy and I ended up being by myself most of the night because Jason came home late from work. It all turned out pretty good though and I'm pretty sure they all had a good time.

For my birthday Jason took all of the kids out of the house and I had a couple friends over for Mary Kay and yummy food. Our Mother's day date was a night out to dinner and a movie. We saw the Avengers movie in 3D. It is the first time I've done a 3D movie all the way through and it was pretty cool.

Caelyn's birthday was on a Tuesday which is 'kids eat free' night at Pizza Ranch so we took her out for her birthday. Our friend Kelsi met us there and it was so great to catch up with her. We don't get to see her as much as we used to but every time we get together it's like she's part of the family.

I am so grateful for my big girls and for the opportunity to be their mother. They both have very special personalities and talents. And as we've been thinking about mothers this month I hope that we get to have the same great relationship that I have with my own mother. We faught at times when I was a teenager but it didn't take too long before I really saw her as a great friend.
Elisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01356974551770701308noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4715668298709178328.post-24088557614028562332012-05-29T15:22:00.001-07:002012-05-29T15:22:51.502-07:00Sandwiches

In our school system here anything containing any kind of nut is not allowed at school. When Charly first started school I was sending her with cold lunch and when you can't include simple PB&J your kind of left with just turkey or ham and cheese. So to mix things up a bit I started cutting the sandwiches into different shapes. Charly loved it but so did the other kids and they soon started demanding different shapes. Now there is no such thing as a simple cut in half or quarters sandwhich. The most popular creation so far is the "C" sandwich. Since my kids are all so lucky to have the same initial it makes things quite easy but Carter noticed the other day that when you take out the middle it makes the shape of a "T" so it's their first and last initial. Kinda fun I think and cool that Carter recognized a letter without me telling him. These will officially be Thrap kid sandwiches.Elisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01356974551770701308noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4715668298709178328.post-28093729373322565192012-05-14T17:21:00.001-07:002012-05-14T17:21:10.578-07:00New CallingOn Sunday I got a new calling to work with the Activity Day girls. These are the girls from church that are 8-11 years old. We get to meet on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month and just do different activites with them to help them grow in their developing testimonies of the Savior and to learn new skills. This week we get to focus on motherhood and work on Mother's Day presents for the girls' moms. I am so excited for this calling. It is right up my ally and I hope that I am still doing it when Charly turns 8 so that we can do it together. I'm not gonna lie; i struggled with my last calling to be the visiting teaching coordinator. It was not that it was a lot of work but it was administrative stuff and woman drama that I just didn't like. I'm glad that I got to see that side of things but I am way more excited about this new adventure. Here is what we are making this week.

It's funny though. It's been about a month since I was released from my visiting teaching calling and I was really starting to miss having some kind of responsibility. I'm so thankful for all the opportunites to serve and for a Heavenly Father that knows just what I need when I need it.
Elisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01356974551770701308noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4715668298709178328.post-42826708559826999422012-05-14T17:19:00.001-07:002012-05-14T17:19:59.674-07:00Thrap Family Gardens Stage 1

It has always been one of my dreams to have my own garden. When I was growing up Mom always talked about having one but never did it. That is until after I had left the house. Lots of things happened that way. Sounds like a pretty simple dream, I know. Last year we spent so much time trying to get our grass to grow so this wonderful Spring that we've had has given us just the right opportunity to get the garden started this year. I'm pretty excited. It seems ironic that we have spent so much time trying to get grass grow only to rip parts of it up. Carter and Caelyn really enjoyed getting to dig in the dirt and play with the worms and other bugs. And of course it is beautiful outside and what better way to cool off than to jump in the pool.
I'm a little behind but since I'm catching up with blogging anyway here is Carissa at 5 months old. It is going by way to fast. The day that she turned five months she officially rolled over on her own and now she does it every time as soon as I layer her on the floor. The only problem is that she doesn't like laying on her stomache very much so she just screams until she wiggles her way back or someone comes and flips her back over. She's working on sitting up on her own and does it really well when she's on my lap but not so much otherwise. She has an adorable curl that sticks out by itself on the left side of her head and more curls are showing up on the top of her head. It makes me kind of excited for when the rest of her hair grows out. The other two girls have some waves but neither of them showed up this early. The comments we get from strangers in public are always about her BIG blue eyes and long eye lashes that just pop out at you. She is beautiful and we love her smile! The bigger kids all love helping to take care of her. Charly often gets her out of bed when she wakes up in the morning, Carter is always right there to do something silly like whack himself in the head to make her laugh and Caelyn will quietly walk up to her with a calming shhh and give her the binki when she's crying. So cute to watch! I love our little family!
Elisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01356974551770701308noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4715668298709178328.post-54762195247580625812012-04-24T15:12:00.001-07:002012-04-24T15:12:17.208-07:00Visiting TeachingI've had some very new experiences recently with visiting teaching that have really opened my mind as to why we really do it and how good it can be when we actually do it and do it right. Visiting teaching really is more about getting out there and actually building a relationship with the people that you are assigned to teach. Actually getting out there and trying your hardest to be a friend and learning to love someone you may not otherwise love, including your companion, is a huge gift that teaches us more to be like Christ who truly does know and love all of us. It is also a way for us to provide and take care of each other. I was able to provide some service to someone I visit teach about a month ago and she told us today that when she needed help and thought about who to go to she wasn't really sure who to call at first. She said that she didn't feel like she knew anyone because she was new to the ward. Then she remembered that she did know her visiting teachers and we were able to help her. I could only imagine how she would have felt in her situation had we not made an effort to see her in the course of the two months previous. Visiting teaching doesn't have to be one awkward visit a month full of mediocre small talk. It can be significantly more meaningful, smaller acts of service with no time frame in which to have it done by. And in doing so we gain friendship and understanding and help when we need it as well.
Elisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01356974551770701308noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4715668298709178328.post-6011953517802782132012-04-23T07:02:00.001-07:002012-04-23T07:02:12.418-07:00Thoughts on Sunday 4/22It felt good to get to go to church today. The last two weeks I have not been able to attend because of other family events.

I had spent Easter weekend with my younger brother, Josh, as he was married to his sweetie Megan. It was a plus to get to be in the Mesa, AZ temple with them and to be reminded of the same things that I made promises to not so long ago to my fantastic husband. It is beautiful to see a new family unit created in the House of the Lord and to remember how I had felt on the day I was married, how I felt about my husband then and how I could have never imagined then that I would love him so much more now. I hope that Megan and Josh get the opportunity to go through struggles and hard times but then get through them with the help of the Lord and come out of them ever so much more in love than they were before. But because of flights and what not on Sunday we missed Easter services.
Then last weekend we spent attending the Kansas City temple open house and then the visitors centers in Liberty and Independence. Independence had a great video they showed about the progression of a family that gave me big reminders on how fast time will fly and how I really needed to slow down a bit. There are lots of things that I could put aside to make time to play with my kids before they don't want to play and talk with me anymore. We also made a trip out to St. Louis so that Jason could run a marathon. Which, as most marathons go, was on a Sunday. So we missed church yet again to watch daddy run. We rode the Metrolink in order to catch him running at certain points in the race and I'm glad we did that instead of driving. So many of the roads were blocked it would have been stressful.

So it was a good feeling to get ready for church today and to walk in on time. Though, like most Sundays, I spend more time at church wrestling with my kids than actually listening to the messages I was able to get some pearls out of what I did hear. In class the teacher talked about how Satan has two ways of getting us off the path to the Lord: he either puffs us up with pride and convices us that we are above the law or he tears us down and makes us feel like we are worthless. I think that I often feel the second one. Especially this week I have been feeling really negative like nobody really liked me or thought that I was cool or someone they could hangout with, confide in or trust. And that is likely all my own fault and I was having my own pitty party like I'm sure we all sometimes do. But there is so much to be grateful for and possitive if we just take time to look around and acknowledge it. I know that I am a daughter of a Heavenly Father who loves me so much that He gave His only Begotten Son. I have a wonderful husband. My kids are all healthy and happy. We have a home and a job. We aren't starving. And we do have some great friends. My goal for this week is to look around and be grateful for one new thing every day. "Count your many blessings, name them one by one, and it will surprize you what the Lord has done." And then not worry about what anyone else does or thinks because that all really doesn't matter.

I've decided that I need to start doing this again. It's a good outlet for me and I think I spend too much time on facebook. Lots of people could probably say that. Besides, my last post was in Aug of 2010. WOW!!! So much has happened in our lives since then!!! Our family and everything is always changing and growing and I better start recording everything before it all slips away from me.Elisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01356974551770701308noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4715668298709178328.post-65050369223996412392010-08-30T21:07:00.000-07:002010-08-30T21:50:01.531-07:00The Summer

I have totally missed keeping up with the blog. Nobody could have prepared me for what this feels like. Dropping that little one off all day for others to watch over and trust that they will take care of her and teach her. Charly seems to have grown too fast....literally. She grew 4 inches this summer! And now she is off to school. It didn't really hit me that she was gone until I walked in to work with only two children and signed only two children into the child watch with me.

I really have felt, ever since she was born, that Charly and I must have been best buds in the premortal existance. I imagine us playing around together in heaven and playing house and deciding that it would be cool if we could go down to earth and I could pretend to be the mom and she could be the sister. She has never really felt like my daughter but like my best bud that would go anywhere and do just about anything with me. Now she is on her first adventure with out me. She will do awesome! Good luck Charly!!!

Elisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01356974551770701308noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4715668298709178328.post-8423152529719413392010-05-21T23:53:00.000-07:002010-05-22T00:47:56.374-07:00Happy Birthday CAELYN!
Caelyn Now (picture taken by Charly)
Caelyn 1 year ago

My little baby girl is one! she is growing up so fast! She is already getting the walking thing down. She says a few words and seems to be able to copy more of what we say all of the time. She is smart enough to know where the Cheetos are hidden and knows where to find me. She has a developing personality. She smiles all the time, she's snuggly, and very much a mama's girl. She is getting more curious and excited about the world around her. She is hilarious to watch when she sees and cat or a dog. I love her so much. It is crazy how as we add each child we can't image how our lives ever were before them. I love how she laughs and chases after her big brother and sister and how she squeezes me when I pick her up. I know that this is just the first of many joyful years to come with this beautiful little girl!

Elisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01356974551770701308noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4715668298709178328.post-66303056903250383952010-05-21T23:28:00.000-07:002010-05-21T23:52:56.762-07:00

So it has been a really long time since I have updated the blog. After talking with my mom this afternoon I figured it is about time to fill anyone who cares in on our lives again. Above are updated fun pics of the kids. A lot has been going on with us. We put our townhouse up for rent in mid Jan. thinking we'd get it out there and then have time to look for a new house but ended up finding a renter two days after we put it up on Craigslist. We quickly cleaned up and moved out. We ended up at Jenny's house the first week of Feb. I'm still trying to figure out if she's ok with it or not. Either way we are now going to be here until the begining to middle of September. After searching for houses for several weeks we ended up deciding to build. They just started this week. A big hole is in the ground.

Elisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01356974551770701308noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4715668298709178328.post-346084759689486382010-01-09T15:58:00.001-08:002010-01-09T16:00:53.150-08:00Caelyn

Caelyn wasn't so sure about the photographer either.
